About JP

I started as a celebrity photographer in New York City in 2006, with work published in The New York Times, GQ, and New York Magazine. In 2010, I started teaching photography — and quickly discovered that helping someone unlock their camera was even more rewarding than taking pictures myself.

Since then, I've taught over 10,000 students personally and over 80,000 online across 165 countries. I've also developed and delivered photography curriculum for 100cameras' Social-Emotional Learning program, partnering with organizations like the UN and UNIDIR.

Before photography, I worked as the Head Maître d' at Eleven Madison Park, one of the top restaurants in the world. That experience taught me something I carry into every lesson: great experiences come down to making people feel seen and supported.

How I Teach

Most photography classes overwhelm you with technical jargon and settings to memorize. My lessons are different.

I guide you through hands-on exercises where you see the results in real time and understand why your camera does what it does. I don't lecture. I meet you where you are — your camera, your questions, your pace — and by the end of a session, you'll have a real understanding of how to get the shots you want.

What you memorize, you can forget. What you discover, you can't undiscover.
